Apple is offering iLife '08 at a substantial discount to users who recently purchased new Macs.

Customers who purchase a qualifying new Macintosh computer on or after 7 August , 2007, that does not have iLife ’08 included can upgrade to iLife ’08 for £9.99 (UK)/ €13.99 (Ireland) including VAT.

Do you know if the upgrade to iLife '08 scrubs out the 'old' and wonderful iMovie HD? IMovie '08 is good for some purposes but almost totally different from iMovie as us long time users (never thought I'd be able to say that!) know it.

No it doesn't over-write it - it will still be there!
I did it & it didn't.
As a further assurance you can get a copy from the Apple site [http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imoviehd603.html].
As a last resort I have a copy!
Bur installing iLife '08 does not wipe iMovie HD out.
Things aint what they used to be .....
Change & decay ....

Now I know how to do it:

Thanks for that reassurance. This is going to sound perverse - please be forgiving. I have bought a new iMac which the box says has iLife '08 (etc of course) pre-installed. So what happens to iMovie '08 if I 'migrate' my existing iMovie HD from my existing machine to the new machine? I hardly dare take the blessed thing out of the box in case I mess up!!

It will probably label it "iMovie (from old Mac)"

Goofed again (I think). I am pretty certain my new machines come with iLife '06. So I'll migrate the '06 stuff on my existing machines to them, and then instal the cheap '08 iLife stuff that Terry told us about. Then, I gather I wll have iLife '08 plus the 'old' iLife iMovie HD which was I waht I want. Gosh. life (& iLife) is so complicated these days. If it doesn't work out, I'll be back when they've let me out of the home for incompetents and hysterics.

Alan, How new is[are] your new machine[s]? I am wondering because iLife '08 is on all the current machines.
If you want the current machines perhaps my experience is of interest.
Last year I bought an iMac Core Duo from the Apple Store. At the very time I was opening it the Core 2 Duo machine was announced!
I was cheesed off at having missed the newest version so narrowly I returned the Core Duo & ordered a Core2Duo! I got my money back on the first machine and I had to pay to return it but the second one was cheaper anyway so I didn't loose out.
I didn't have to give a reason for returning it - I was simply within the time during which it could be done - I forget how long that was. It was a simple process.

I bought my new machines on 23rd and 28th August. I cannot remember why (!) but it seemed important at the time even though I knew then that I wouldn't be setting them up until after a holiday which is just over. So after a few brandies, I shall soon be having a go to get them working. I got them from Solutions in Bournemouth and they said (as I recall) that they were loaded with iLife '06 and that i could get the '08 upgrade from Apple for approx £10 as described by Terry. This offer lasts until 20th November according to the web site.
If I find these machine have '08, I may be calling on you for iMovie HD if my version doesn't work.
Incidentally, I bought the new iMac at that time because there were very few anti-glare machines left and I couldn't contemplate the dazzling ones which Steve Jobs thinks are so terrific. The latest issue of MacFormat says the glass screens take some getting used to although they are apparently easier to clean - any old window cleaner will do, and there's weird message hidden in there somewhere. I know Alexander Cox makes a good case for these glass screens but they wouldn't suit me.

I had to wait 2 hours while the Apple staff at Southampton unpacked the ILife 8 and paid full family fair for it and IWork 8. Then could not register them in the Apple site because it did not recognize them.
I asked if they were having an event for Leopard, they had not thought about it.
Perhaps they should read the press and get excited like the rest of us.

Hello everyone - I am thinking of buying a new imac in the future ( probably in the next two months ) the cheapest one in the range - I have been very laxed over the last three years in keeping up to date I have to admit and so I've been reading the discusions here with interest - could someone tell me a couple of things about buying a new imac
1. I read somewher about a glass screen ? is that on the imac ? or just on the lap tops ? you are all probably all laughing at me allready ! but I'm just realy catching up after being out of the loop
2. at the moment the processors are a dule core intel - is there any rumors of anything significantly different as regards to an upgrade such as a triple ? on the horizon? or is the dual core thing as high as is the imac is as likely to go in the near future ?
3. Excuse me for sounding such an idiot ! but if anyone has any insight into the future ( just a couple of months would be a help ! ) as to wher the imac is heading BEFORE I use my hard earned sheckles I would be very gratefull indeed to hear from them
Kind Regards

The glass screen on the new iMac is said to give much sharper images and brilliant colours, however because of the glossiness you have to be careful where you site your iMac to avoid annoying reflections. The new Mac books have glossy screens too, but with a laptop it is easier to change position to avoid reflections.

The latest Intel core two duo chips are satisfyingly quick and the new iMac is up to date in that respect. However who knows what secrets Intel have tucked away. If you wait until the next better iMac (or any other Mac) comes along you could be waiting a long time; nothing stays still in technology. The new iMac is a stunning machine which will keep you chortling into your mouse mat for a long time to come.
