Log In window

Avatar David Fleetwood
On my Log In window under the Apple logo and after 'Mac OS X' and the name chosen for the computer, there is a number in brackets. Does anyone know what the significance of this number is?
I have 2 iMac's which are networked and on the older one the number in brackets has steadily increased to 8. The newer one shows 2. The only practical issue this seems to create is that when the number changes on the one to which the printer is connected, I have to do a fresh search for the printer on the other one (printer sharing is on), and then reinstall the driver. Just a bit of a nuisance but I wonder what causes the number to increase.

David,
it's your numerical past come back to haunt you... But seriously: my startup screen greets me with "Morning, sleep well? Time for a big mug of tea..."

This can be done in Onyx and is a fun thing. But if you look at this setting in Onyx (parameters > startup message) you might (conceivably) find something else there, or among other choices.

Something is counting an event (print driver problem?) so you might check (Console > crash reporter) or system reports to see if anything puts a number up for display. Beyond that it's the Apple knowledgebase -- and numerical repentance!

Please let us all know if you find out what it is.
Best, Euan.
