Leopard...!

Avatar Terry Willis
We queued up at the APPLE store Southampton for the release of Leopard. Difficult to estimate the queue, but at most, a couple of hundred I would think. The traditional countdown happened at six o'clock at the front of the queue (we were near the back!), then everyone was fed into the shop.

It was packed at first, all the machines had Leopard running and there were plenty of copies for sale, plus many buying hardware as well! I must say, we were very restrained sticking to the OS only (very tempting though!), plus of course getting our free T shirts!!

How many others queued or got their copy by mail order...? How's the installations going...?

TNT guy came at 11.30, had installed (after cloning my startup disk) 40 minutes later. Inquisitor (Safari plug-in) is the only thing I've found that's broken so far. Even my HP scanner drivers (last updated for Tiger & PPC only) work fine. Time Machine takes an age to do anything (the copy seems determined to run only in the background) but everything else is fine. Though I no longer have the option of hierachical menus in the dock, which is slightly annoying- instead of one pop-up menu to use all my regular apps, I need six. Otherwise, most impressed so far, definite improvement on Tiger.

Leopard now installed. Time machine currently working away...!

What's Leopard? if it caused a queue it must be free - is it? ;-)

Re: Leopard...!

...if only! Like Dr Who, I've got my own time machine (It does appear to be taking it's time(!) though). ;o)

Bought off the Apple site, it was delivered Friday morning.

All installations successful, however uncovered one 'gotcha'.

Photoshop 7 no longer works.... :-( This will need to rethink one installation.

Thank goodness everything was backed up securely before hand. :-)

Still, it is running very nicely even the 'old' Powerbook G4.

For Mr Burrell's infromation (see above): Leopard is a new species which has evolved over time from ancestors two of which wre called Panther and Tiger. Now, there are some strange representatives of the species known as 'homo sapiens' whose sapiental qualiies desert them when a new species emerges. Leopard is an example. There is an old saying that 'Leopard never chanes its spots'. I confidentally redict that this will prove eroneous and that Leopad as we now know it will indeed change its spots and evolve into an even more magnificent beast. Be patient, Mr Burrell, and capture your personal Leopard at some sensible time in the future. You will be finacially poorer but feel enrichd by your new possession (I hope).

LOL! Thank you Alan - I will try very soon

Spots... I didn't get any spots!? ;o)

I am up and running with Leopard and Time Machine hums reassuringly now and again.

No problems except that I am irritated by the icon on the front of the Stacks in the Dock.
I used to keep folders of things I use frequently in the Dock. Each had a distinctive icon.
In Leopard the Stacks have a similar function except that the icon changes to the last item to be put in.
This means I have to magnify the Stack in order to read it's name to identify the one I want to open.

I have looked for a way to keep the same Icon on the front of the Stack without success - does anyone know if it is possible?
If not then I guess that this is one of the spots that Alan identified & Terry didn't spot that will not change [yet].

I use DragThing for multiple docks - looks like it's a similar idea to stacks in that you can keep what you want there - folder, applications, files - anything. My guess is it would work with Leopard. It's at

It's broken Toast 7's ability to make disc images (haven't tried burning a disc)- checked the Roxio forums, it's not just me. But I've just bought v8 on eBay, so if that doesn't work it'll soon get fixed. And for all the complaints/suggestions, don't forget to tell Apple via their feedback form http://www.apple.com/feedback/macox.html . I've already done this to suggest improvements to stacks (hierarchical menus and sorting out those icons!).

Re: Leopard...!

Avatar Terry Willis
I know it's an old App, but Photoshop Elements v2 is broken as well...

Re: Leopard...!

Avatar Alan Cox
Anyone remember 10.4.10 – a good old workhorse (actually not very old) which feasted on Photoshop Elements 2 and Toast 7, both apparntly shattered by Leopard. Whatever next? I dread losing Appleworks (sorry Euan!) which has a nice little database component which I use for address labels. iWork of whatever iteration doesn't have this. Can anyone tell me if Leopard swallows this up in its greedy jaws?

I had problems with opening key chains with Leopard. However, recourse to the Knowledge Base article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306840 has apparently cured the problem, by downloading the recommended update, which enables earlier keychains to be recognised.

It must be worth keeping an eye on Macfixit (http://www.macfixit.com/ ) over the next few days.

I have just had an email with six dates for future meetings embedded in the text. [not WAGs meetings - don't ask!]
They were in this sort of format: 'on December 5th at 10.00am' and 'will be Wednesday June 4th'.
The Data Detectors in the Leopard version of Mail noticed them and I was able to put them into iCal with just one click.
The email's subject was the event title in the small iCal window that popped up and the possibility to set up alarms & so on was just as it would have been if I had opened iCal myself.
Magnificent! - a pleasure to do what had been a real chore in the past. Ain't that what these machines are all about?
I have yet to receive an address to test out.
Viva Leopard!

Here in Tumbi Umbi Australia the Leopard landed on time and has been installed smoothly on my Power Book G4.
There was a period when iWeb files played up and when the slideshow option was activated on a site all you got was a black screen when viewed with the current edition of Safari.Firefox worked however !!
After reporting the behaviour Apple must have fixed it because the feature now works on Safari which suggests a change to the html file generation.
There are problems with viewing with Explorer or Netscape however which may have been there before.

Lionel, I have just seen your post in a widget I made with the new Safari! Cool indeed.

I'm a Leopard in the jungle too. Backed up to Time machine on a local basis to HD, works fine.
However, anybody got any ideas on making Time machine back up to a Lacie HD through wireless on an AirPort Extreme Base Station with Gigabit Ethernet.
Apparently Apple know of the problem but I'm looking for a fix.
Here's hoping
