Sending e-mail attachments to PC users

Avatar Lionel Ogden
My brother-in-law runs a website for Andalusian Horse enthusiasts and occasionally receives e-mails with attached photos from Mac Users which he finds he cannot open and has to to do a screen copy. We have tried the usual things like sending as a Windows friendly file but this does not seem to be the problem. He doesn't have a problem with attachments to e-mails which I send to him

When he forwarded one of the offending e-mails to me I found I could open the attached photos in Mac Mail, Windows Mail in Vista in Parallels 4 and Outlook express in XP in Parallels3. Apart from telling him to get a Mac does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be happening to these occasional e-mails he receives from Mac users.

There's not enough information to provide a solution.

Information required includes what or 'how' does he view the emails (webmail, outlook ect) and what operating system, including service pack is he running. Also when he said "Mac Users" how many are we talking about, 1 , 2 or many. You need to look at the source code of the emails to find out what client they are sent from as well.

With the above information you should be able work out where the problem lies, with the sender or the receiver.

Hope that helps.

I have had PC users complain they couldn't open some attachments. Sometimes this turns out to be real (and seemingly random). Often though it is simply that the resource fork of the Mac file appears as a second attachment. So, you might send two pictures but the PC recipient might see four attachments and complain that they couldn't open some of them.

Just a thought.

Just had a further thought about this. My brother-in-law receives these odd e-mails from three or four of his members and I wonder whether it is an OS9 or even OS8 problem. My b-i-l does not know which version they use. Does anyone who still uses OS9 send e-mail attachments to PC friends which they cannot save?

see:
Mail > Edit > Attachments > Always send Windows friendly attachments.

Should fix the problem.
