Apple support options

Any thoughts on where I should go for help on the following matter. Bought a new iMac in March (now just out of the 90 day cover!). It was bought at PC World, Heathrow Airport. Recently and this could be since installing 10.5.7 but can't be certain, when our son's user a/c has had it's allocated daily time under Parental Controls, when I log in to my a/c the screen view swings to my desktop but then immediately back either to the log in window or a blank blue screen. The same happens if I try to add additional time to our son's a/c for that day. Effectively the computer can't be used until the next day when there is a fresh allocation of hours - very frustrating! It seems Apple Care support cover would cost £130-odd but I would hope there was another way to solve this problem.

This sounds like a software error. Try creating another account for your son and deleting the original or try reinstalling the combined update from the Apple site after downloading it.

If you did the update by using the automatic software up date - try downloading te combo update and and thren install that to see if that overcomes the problem.

Did you repair permissions before and after applying the update. See Disk Utility.

Thanks for your comments Terry and Derek. I rather 'fired off' the post in frustration because my son was bending my ear to fix it like yesterday!! I am not now 100% sure it is linked with Parental Controls as it did it once even after the time limits were switched off. I did 'repair permissions' after applying 10.5.7 but not before - it didn't clear the problem.
I recall the comments about the update at the recent Bournemouth meeting - I thought I had escaped any consequences of not using the combo update but perhaps not, do I have to uninstall anything before running the combo?

No need to uninstall any thing before installing the Combo update - it overwrites the OS with all the new code that has been issued since the initial shipment

Just to update everyone on this issue. The Combo update didn't work - and various other things I tried! In the end I spoke to Apple Support and paid my £35 for a one-off bit of support. They were very good and eventually i got palls with a French guy called Gregory who was working for Apple in Cork!! - he didn't like the weather there!
Anyway it took a couple of calls to get past the front-line people at the support call centre. Their initial ideas didn't work so obviously I became classed as a difficult case - or a nuisance, don't know which! Being passed up to 'Senior Assistant' meant that I had one contact point at Apple who followed it through personally thereafter. Interestingly he sent me a small app. called Data Capture which enabled him to check on various things relating to how my system was working, rather than asking me a lot of questions. The actual problem in Parental Controls, was resolved by creating a new user account and copying and pasting the settings from this into our Son's settings - bingo! Obviously somehow our son's settings had got corrupted. Although it cost a bit, I was very pleased with the result.
