phone sockets and ADSL

Avatar Eric Jervis
I recently fitted a new phone socket in a bedroom for my daughter's laptop. It works perfectly.
However, even more recently, I fitted one in my own room, and it doesn't.
It will work strictly as a phone socket, but will not once I plug in the ADSL filter. Even the phone will not work plugged in to that.
Any ideas anyone?

Have you tried another filter? It sounds like the filter may be faulty. If it works with another filter, fine, just get another one, but if the problem persists with all filters, then you'll have to think again.

Thank you, Tony, I've tried that, and I think I've sussed it out. I was describing what I'd done to someone this morning, when I realized what I hadn't done. Initially, after I'd plastered the new cable into the wall, (why did I not check it first?), the box was almost completely dead. i.e. when I plugged in the phone I couldn't hear anything. I worked out that one of the wires must be broken, and, joy of joys, the cable contained four wires, only three of which were used. I disconnected the white with blue bands and substituted the white with orange bands, at which stage the phone worked but the filter didn't. The fact that the phone worked must have slipped my brain into neutral because I had not actually swapped those two wires at the socket end. I'm going to do that now!
