Log-in with Safari 3

Avatar Lionel Ogden
Why is it that when I access the log-in page with Safari the log-in details are blank even though I have asked it to remember me. Yet when I log-in using Camino the log-n details are there. Surely our Mac Group is not becoming unfriendly to Mac software!!!

Works OK for me. Looks like one for the webmeister!

Have you tried it with Firefox 3? It does the same thing to me with iCab and Safari; but with FFx it welcomes me like an old friend: however, some of my bookmarked sites still give me the cold shoulder. It seems that certain sites are best accessed with certain browsers?

Could this be what is going on? It seems to have fixed a similar problem for me.
I found it in MacFixIt:

Mac OS X 10.5.6: cookies disappearing after installation

A number of users have noticed that after installing the Mac OS X 10.5.6 update, their cookies seem to have disappeared.

Apple Discussions poster Periastron writes:

"Since upgrading to 10.5.6 earlier this week, my cookies have been wiped three times. This is more than a minor inconvenience, since some of those cookies are used to track unread messages on some discussion forums I visit."

For affected users, this problem repeats itself with newly created cookies, sometimes up to several times a day. As such, users who subscribe to websites that require persistent login may run into problems. Additionally, site-related settings and other features will keep resetting to defaults as the cookies are removed. Users have suspected antivirus software, and also have tried resetting permissions, but these attempts have only delayed the cookie removal at best.

It appears this problem is due to users having active web clips in their dashboards during the update to 10.5.6. Somehow if the webclip widget was used in 10.5.5, with 10.5.6 this widget will keep deleting cookies as long as web clips are loaded in it. As such, to correct this problem users will have to remove instances of this widget and add them back.

Fix: Remove webclip widget instances from dashboard Open Dashboard and close any "webclip" internet clipping widgets. Once this is done, users can use Safari to navigate to the sites that hosted the webclips, and recreate them.

NO! It didn't fix it for me!
I have just had to log into our wamug website.
Hey-ho

No it didn't fix it for me either. However I only have to enter the first letter of my user name and then it is completed together with the password. Very odd!

So far I have been able to log in using Camino, Firefox and Opera, but Safari still keeps me secret 'till I give it a clue

I can log in using Safari alright but not with Camino or Firefox have to fill in name and password each time

This is a three pipe problem Watson, and whilst it is usually fatal to theorize without sufficient data, we may set out for consideration certain known facts. Firstly, when a fellow arrives at the website, before the site presents him with either the 'log in' page or the 'log out' page, it must have asked his computer a question, and depending on the answer it receives, it makes a decision. We shall need to know the intimate details of Mr Cheney's computer, operating system, version of Safari etc., and whether Apple, in their infinite wisdom, have arrogantly taken it upon themselves to update any of the aforementioned items, and if so, to what extent, without really asking his permission. In fact, upon sober reflection, I doubt we shall discover the answer to the problem in our lifetime.

Works okay for me on both Safari and Camino.

It appears Camino and Safari create their own key chain access entries for WAMUG. Look for wamug.org.uk in your keychain, in the access control tab you will see the application the password is associated with. Try removing any wamug entry which is associated with the browser which is having trouble filling in the password for you.

Quit the browser before retrying to log in again, on the second login attempt it might start working again.

Fingers crossed... Next suggestion may involve having to sacrifice a goat or two. :-)

Thanks Martin!
Some magic has done it!
When I looked as you suggested the keychain password was accessible to all applications -
However it wasn't the password that I had been using!
I closed all tabs & quit Safari -
Next visit to our website - bingo - straight in!

I find that if I use Camino to log in and browse when I go back and use Safari I have to log in again. If I then go back to Camino I have to log in again

I experienced a similar problem, which seems to have been resolved by going to the Safari preferences - Autofill, and checking the appropriate box which seemed to have unchecked itself for some mysterious reason! I am unable to correlate this with any change to the system or application, but was just relieved to find it worked in my case.

Yes it worked for me too. Thanks Steve
