If you have a Canon printer that won't run on Big Sur because Canon have stopped supporting that model, go to Gutenprint. Their latest printer driver for Big Sur works and it is free.
There is a slight mystery about it in that having downloaded and installed the driver, I could not find it in Spotlight. But it works nevertheless.
I bought a Canon laser LBP226 recently and connected it via AirPrint. It is currently used by 2 iMacs and a MacBook Air and has worked flawlessly on Big Sur.
I believe Michael and Mick are talking about old printers that Canon no longer support. I suspect that the printer you bought recently was new not secondhand.
