Beware a WiFi router from TalkTalk

Avatar Mark Ford
I have just switched my isp from f2s to TalkTalk.
Great, I thought - I can save £14 a month on my total telecoms spend - not to be sneezed at.
Kit arrived - neat looking modem - Huawei model HG520b, tidy power adaptor, Mac friendly looking documentation.
Switch day came and all went very smoothly - until I wanted to use iChat.
Skype was OK but I could only take incoming stuff from iChat audio and video - couldn't start to think about screen-sharing of file transfers - broken.
Never mind - the documentation was very positive about telephone support. So I phoned.
"I'm afraid we don't support iChat.'
Managed to escalate to 'advanced tec support' where the final advice was to go back to my Netgear DG834G which had been working with f2s. I got set up with the internet Ok.
I am not sure how I got involved in the next madness but I was given 'under the counter' information about portforward.com where I was left alone to work through a gigantic list of things to do to set the Netgear up to suit iChat. In the early hours I got to the end although I had little confidence in having done it right.
iChat seems to work perfectly now although I have no idea what ports are open or how vulnerable I may have become by my blundering about with the arcane mysteries of internet access.
I would really like to reset the modem and start all over again but I dare not!
As my Mum used to say "Mark, you *** don't mess about with things you don't understand - it will only end in tears!"

I'm with O2, and as part of the deal I got their wireless box (rebadged Thomson SpeedTouch). Which has stayed in the box, my Belkin works just fine. I've had the odd glitch with the connection being live but it not actually working, but that seemed to be a DNS issue, which I've now resolved.
It wasn't broke so I didn't fix it!

Thank you Mick for your help off list - particularly the site that checked the security of my set up. All is good now.
I will remember your final remark Stuart .... ah me ... I guess my Mum would have said that too.
