Handoff

Avatar Trevor Hewson
Following David’s excellent talk last evening, I’ve started to work through the various Continuity features he covered and have hit my first problem.

One of the ways I hoped to use Handoff was to look up a place on Maps on my iPad then pick this up on my iPhone for navigation purposes in the car. I can get this to work the other way round - if I find a location on the phone then go to the iPad I get the Maps icon in the dock with the 📱 symbol in the corner.

However I can’t get it to work from iPad to phone - the expected banner at the bottom of the screen just doesn’t show up. I’ve checked that Bluetooth and Handoff are enabled on both devices and they’re both on the same WiFi network.

The iPad (13.7in pro) is on iOS 13: the iPhone6 though is on iOS12.

Any tips?

Saying that it works here is not very helpful but I have looked through my phone's settings. Grasping at straws, I do have 'Background App Refresh' turned on for Maps. It's not listed in the Handoff requirements but might be worth trying if not already set.

Hmm.. Background App Refresh is turned on for Maps on the iPad but is greyed out on the iPhone. Curiouser and curiouser. . .

There is a 'global' Background App Refresh: if that were off, it would cause the Maps control to be greyed out. But we are clutching at straws here...

Okay, all working now. For some reason, I expected the banner to pop up when I was in the Maps app, and didn’t think of visiting the app switching screen.

Next up, Universal Clipboard. . .

Well done. Chalk up another success for (re)reading the manual?

I found Universal Clipboard to be very flaky at first but now it seems solid. You have to be quite quick though (frustratingly, Apple doesn't actually state the length of the timeout).
