Safari list of ‘Bookmarked’ sites has vanished on my iMac (OS High Sierra)

Avatar Roy Rainford
Until a few days ago I had a list of websites in the sidebar which I had visited and bookmarked in Safari v13.0.3. Now I just have a list of so-called ‘Favourites’ which include sites that are not my favourites and some not even visited.
If I click on the top selection bar, a number of icons appear headed by, ‘Frequently Visited’. Some of these are useful but there are only six of these. How do I return to my sidebar with a full list of bookmarked sites?

I know, these porn sites are so embarrassing when they appear in favourites!

I'm not sure this allows you to get back your sites but here is the procedure for at least setting up bookmarks and deleting unwanted favourites.

Adding a bookmark is done by clicking on the share icon at the top right of the screen and selecting Add Bookmark. It is very easy then to put the website url into Favourites (or Favorites as the Americans call it) unless Bookmarks is selected in the pop-up window. Having added the bookmark or favourite they appear in the sidebar.

In the menu system View>Show sidebar and Bookmarks>Show Bookmarks do the same thing and show bookmarks in the sidebar, however Favourites are also shown but can be “compacted” by clicking on the little triangle.

To edit bookmarks and favourites (or delete them) go to Bookmarks>Edit bookmarks. Click on the favourites little triangle to expand the favourites for editing (or deletion). Here folders can be made to group bookmarks: Photography, Garden, Porn sites etc.

Thanks Rick. I wonder which porn sites you find embarrassing?
Your solution is appreciated but doesn't bring back my previous bookmarks. Perhaps I deleted them somehow. Time Machine or iCloud may have them. Will explore or start to rebuild them.

Roy - A thought: there is a 'disclosure' triangle next to each heading in the side bar. If you have accidentally clicked that (so it is now pointing downwards) then all of your saved sites will have been shifted down, possibly out of sight. If you click the triangle next to 'Favourites' so it points sideways, it's just possible that everything will reappear. 🤔

Rick - it's those Land Rover sites again isn't it, you know what the doctor said.

Thanks Tony. The triangle you mention is there against the heading 'Favourites' but when it's pointing downwards 13 website titles are shown. Several of them I never visit. eg. Yahoo, Bing, Twitter, LinkedIn, Yelp and Trip Advisor. Certainly not my favourites. When I click the arrow to point sideways, all those sites vanish and I am left with the heading 'Favourites'. There is one other heading in the sidebar, 'Web Search' and when I click the triangle to point downwards, 3 website titles appear, Bing, Yahoo and Twitter. My old 'Bookmarked' sites don't appear when I scroll the sidebar fully up and down.

Are your bookmarks there when you click the bookmark menu?

No Lionel. The bookmarks previously showed when I clicked that icon but now only 'Favourites' are listed. I can make new bookmarks and they appear under 'Favourites' or 'Web Search'.
