Another ongoing problem. A jumping cursor

Avatar Michael Corgan
For some time both my wife and I have been plagued when using our MacBooks (Pro and Air) both running High Sierra. When typing in Pages and Mail the cursor jumps back into the body of already typed work and inserts the next keystrokes until you realise that it has happened. There seems to be no pattern with this, and it doesn't happen to me when using non-Apple apps, for example using Entourage for emails. It is annoying. Has anyone else experienced this and if so have they cured it?

Have a look on my thread of the 26 Jan 2016 09:12:25. Page 16

I have had this problem for a considerable time.

Thanks Drew - however your post refers to using the trackpad as I read it, and of course, it may be that we are inadvertently touching the track pad while we type, and it is this that causes the jump. I shall try blanking the track pad off and see if that makes a difference. I'll let you know in a week or so. (Off to Norfolk tomorrow)

Just tried a quick experiment by popping several sheets of an A6 scrap pad over the trackpad in the MacBook Pro, No problem, Removed the scrap paper, and bits of text were again being inserted randomly in the previously typed areas. I will make a couple of card covers for the trackpads when I get back and tape them so that they can be hinged back when the track pads are needed. Maybe that was the trouble all along. After this there remains one more problem. Watch this spot!

I have seen this issue occasionally for a while now too.

The MacBooks are supposed to have something called 'palm rejection' that senses an inadvertent touch on the trackpad whilst typing and ignores (rejects) it. I do wonder if that is broken in recent versions of macOS; if so, it may well disappear in a new release of the OS (perhaps Catalina).

I haven't reported it to Apple but it might help if someone did...
