Backing up to more than one drive

Avatar Rick Churchill
I have temporarily mislaid my backup drive. I use Time Machine. If I set the computer to back up to another drive, when I find my original drive will be confused and erase all my previous backups.

I am worried that I find I need to go back several backups to find something I have over-written or deleted.

I've just found my drive hiding underneath a paper but I would still like to know the answer.

In the Time Machine pane of System Preferences you'll see the option to Add or Remove Backup Disk. This lets you have several backup drives, each of which TM will endeavour to keep up to date.

So no harm will come to your existing back-ups. However, be aware that TM will expect in future to see both drives regularly to update them and will nag you if this doesn't happen.

I maintain two backup disks, one of which lives off-site. They get switched about once a month, TM spends the second half of each month asking me to connect the off-site disk. It does no harm.

Thanks Tony; your backup routine does you credit.
