He has tried starting in safe mode and as far as I understand it gets to the start up screen and locks asking for a password. I am going to have a look at it this afternoon and see what I can find out
The problem was that some one had put MacKeeper on the Mac and it was giving a warning screen saying to download another program. I managed to get out of it and deleted Mackeeper. Installed Malware Bites and scanned the system and found 5 nasties deleted them, and all seems to be well.
