I shouldn't have done it, should I? I initialised the smaller hard drive and reinstalled OS 9.2.2. Not only does the desktop look wrong, but iMovie has disappeared completely. Have I cocked up the installation somehow? I've installed nothing else at all: if iMovie isn't part of the OS where the hell did I get it from?
I had a look through the discs that came with my old Graphite iMac running 9.2.1. iMovie came on a separate CD. The iMovie version is 1.0.1. Don't know if they did anything later than that for OS 9.
Morning John, no luck I'm afraid. My address is: Gilmos, Bridge Moor, Redruth TR16 4QA. Have you had any experience of this app? I ask because, reading between the lines, I may have discovered the answer to my earlier question: I've discovered that Micro Amvika sell iLife 05 for about £50. It contains iMovie, a version which will run under Tiger, and a version of QuickTime which is older than the one I've been using. It seems to me possible that the reason I had a good result with iMovie and a duff one with the QuickTime movie was because the two apps did not match. What do you think? It also occurred to me that iMovie might just run faster as regards the rendering into the Quicktime format on my much bigger hard drive under OS X. I wouldn't consider the 50 quid wasted if the thing did what it is supposed to do.
Eric, I don't know if I can really help with advice regarding Quicktime. I did a mammoth home movie on version 3 which came in at over five hours after editing. To be honest, it was my first and last attempt at home movies. It took so long, that I got totally bored with it and haven't bothered with anything on that scale since. Now I just shoot stuff and say I'll get around to editing another day.
If you find that iLife 05 is suitable for your needs, do you still wish to borrow my copy of iMovie 1.0.1 for OS 9? Please advise. If you do, I'll pop it in the post.
John, thank you again, but probably not. I've been off line for a few days, (pressure of work/home etc.), but I've bought iLife 04 for £25 from TheMacDoc, who deals in old & new software, which has not yet arrived. When it does I shall install only iMovie, which should work for me under Tiger, though the HD part of it won't owing to the slowth of my processor.
I've been following your philosophy of 'do it later' for three & a half years now, and I'm worried that the tapes I've shot will deteriorate if I leave it much longer. I think it's probably preferable to use iMovie in Tiger rather than in OS 9 as it should (God willing) render it faster into QuickTime. The first few times I tried this it took ages; so long, in fact, that I pressed the button before going to bed, only to discover in the morning that the computer had apparently stalled before the end. I upgraded the hard drive and maxed out on the memory, and when I did it again a week or so ago, having extracted about half an hour of film, (on second best quality), it only took about 100 minutes. Half an hour for a home movie is not a bad length, considering that a Super 8 film only lasted three and a quarter minutes, and I used to splice them together to make about half an hour. Now I come to think of it, I must have used at least two different versions of iMovie, because I remember last year being offered about five different qualities when rendering to QT, and this year only three. The two highest qualities would have taken at least a fortnight to do.
I'll keep you posted!
p.s. A friend of mine who uses Ubuntu says that there are iMovie blogs on the internet somewhere; I shall have a look.
Hallo John, yes please! My last comment seems to have disappeared, but what I said was that the software arrived but refused to install itself as it needed a CD drive rather than my DVD drive! How depressing.
Eric, Totally off topic I know, but thought you might find this site interesting. Being interested in old cinemas, I came across this from your part of the world.
That's QI John, in fact I pass this place every day as it's just around the corner from my cafe (The Station Buffet). Mind you, it's an architectural monstrosity and I keep hoping that al Quaeda will target it!
Regarding the original topic, problem solved! Two disks come with OS 9, Software Install, which I used, and which has caused my problems, and Software Restore, which contains iMovie 2.0.1, and which has now solved all my problems. Thank you for your interest everybody.
Eric, many thanks for the return of the CD and the cost of postage. – A kind thought.
On reflection, I realise it was a wasted effort. But it served to show that with a bit of team work, we get there in the end. Glad to hear you've now got over the problem.
