I was unable to create my initial success with importing and printing Pagemaker files via Preview so I reinstalled PageMaker, paying particular attention to Postscript items. It now exports to PDF as it should do, which immediately fires up Acrobat Distiller, creating a file on the desktop which can be copied to the OS X drive. I then restart in OS X, double click the file, which fires up Preview, and I have a file which prints out perfectly. Hallelujah. Which saves me the trouble of buying inDesign 2. Might do it anyway though, just to see if it's any good. (If it's cheap enough!)
Eric - I've watched your posts with interest. As you are 'only' creating posters, why do you require Adobe inDesign or Pagemaker? Both are intended for use on multiple page documents. I've a feeling that you are using a sledgehammer to crack a nut...! But you may know different.
Terry - You're quite right. I suppose it's vanity really; I'm not involved in the trade anymore but I still love it. I never made a lot of money from printing because I used to do some jobs because I fancied the challenge. (A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do).
