I like to use a previous letter as a form of template when starting a new one so that my address details are there and the recipient's address is correctly placed for the 'Window' envelopes used. I then re-address it to the new recipient and type the new letter. In previous versions of either the OS or of Pages I could 'Save as' for the new letter but now find that I can only 'Save' which overrides the original. Is there a way of doing 'Save as' in Pages v 5.6.2 and OS 10.11.6 ?
Apple expect you to save this type of file as a template so that future letters don't overwrite it. You could probably still do that (from the file menu) but alternatively, hold down the Alt key and click the file menu - the Duplicate option will change to Save As
Alan, I also have "Save as template" but don't want a template for every letter I write. I could be misinterpreting that term but prefer "Save As" and now use the Alt key to select that from the menu, as Mick suggested above.
But Roy, you don't have to, at least not in my version which has the standard 'Save as .....' option 5th from the top in the drop down File menu plus the 'Save as template' option 3rd from the bottom.
Interesting Alan that we are both using version 5.6.2. I wonder if we are using the same OS 10.11.6 or does the difference in our computer models produce a different menu? The 5th option from the top of my File menu is 'Save' and when I hold down the Alt key then 'Save' remains but 'Save as' takes the place of 'Duplicate' in 6th position.
In my (old) version of Pages, if I want to save a copy under a different file name, I duplicate it and then use the save menu to give it a different file name.
Several years ago (maybe 5), Apple introduced a new document model to OS X. It tracks changes to a document (invisibly) and allows the user to revert to previous states (you can see this behaviour using 'Revert To' lower down the File menu, it's a bit like a local Time Machine).
Apple believed that this removed the need for 'Save As' so supplied Duplicate as a replacement. I believe Lionel is using it as Apple intended.
However, it broke so many people's workflows that Apple rapidly back-tracked and reinstated 'Save As' (many people use it to freeze a copy of a document at a particular state but continue to work on an "issue 2").
'Save As' now exists, as standard, as Option-Duplicate in most document based apps (technically, the behaviour is built into NSDocument which is the usual start point for people writing "document-based" apps).
