creating a website

Avatar Eric Jervis
I've seen some really duff websites, and I want to create one that will be superb, and will charm the money out of the punters' debit cards. I may say in passing that the Website Formerly Known as WAMUG is one of the best I've seen. What do I need Gentlemen?

I have used this freebie: https://www.weebly.com/uk but not for eCommerce.

Hi Roy, what did you use it for, and was the result superb?

Eric, I suggest that what you see as superb or duff is down to the design ability of the author, not the software used to create it. You must come up with your superb design from your head and then use software you can cope with to build it.

Roy's suggestion is a good starting point. For more control but more learning on your part would be Freeway or Freeway Pro or you could look at Wordpress.

Eric, the website was simply to 'showcase' aspects of my photography. It wasn't designed for direct sales. These are handled by an agent. I was satisfied with it for a few years but have now reduced it to one page with a link to images I have with a picture library. I didn't see it as 'superb' or 'duff'. It just did what I wanted for a time and it was fairly easy to put together using Weebly templates.

Wow, I've never been clear on the exact definition of Wessex, but I didn't know it was that big!

Eric is a long-standing member who, whilst living too far away to ever attend a meeting, sees our bulletin board as worth his membership fee on its own!

I consider it a great bargain, Mick!

I've had a look at Sparkle and the reviews are impressive. I could download a trial version but it requires OSX 10.9 or higher and I'm using the humble 10.8.5. Could I install El Capitan on my external LaCie drive without getting involved in repartitioning it?

Have you got iWeb in your application folder, if you have you could try that. The tutorials seem quite good

I'll have a look at it Douglas; in the meantime I bit the bullet and installed EC on an external partition (5 1/2 hours) then downloaded Sparkle. So far I'm not impressed; I can only find four tutorials, when I want to look at perhaps the penultimate one which shows me how to accept the customers' payments! Grrrr..

iWeb was good, I've used it for several years, but it's reaching the end of its life. Some things became cranky with Yosemite and more things have stopped working on El Capitan. I don't think it's a good place to start a new web site, assuming that you'll want to support it for a while.

I think I'll give up on actually Tony, there's firm called Red who will do it for under £300, but I've still got a few weeks to consider things as I'm not yet ready to market the product.
