POP/IMAP

I have had problems sending mail from my yahoo.co.uk address for a long time and could only get messages away via my ISPs server. When I got a new iPad recently, I set the account up using the iOS wizard and it has worked faultlessly, so today I bit the bullet and deleted the account from the iMac and then added it back again using the OSX wizard. This seems to have done the trick but I notice that the account is now shown as IMAP whereas it was preciously a POP account. I'm pretty sure that it was set up as a POP account on the iPad but I must admit that I now can't seem to confirm that. Is it even possible to have the same account set up differently on two devices and, if so, what issues can I expect to arise?
