9 year old iMac running slowly

Avatar Mark Ford
My sister has an 2007 20" 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo iMac which is running v slowly.
What simple things might she do to speed it up?
Am I right to think that OS 10.10.4 is the maximum that she can install?
Or does it need replacing completely?

Old Macs can always be refreshed with more memory and/or a SSD Drive! But a Mid 2007 iMac with 4 GB RAM can be rather tight these days with the latest OS version. It all depends what software she is using with it. A 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo is still good for everyday tasks.

My iMac is a late 2006 with similar spec and I am unable to run anything higher than 10.7 so although on the slightly later mac you would be able to load the later OS, as Martin says it would find it a struggle. Would it be possible to go back an upgrade or two?

The 2007 iMac had a better graphics chip so will take the latest OS. The failure to stop supporting older Macs was around the greater graphics features (if I remember right). One more thought on the slow iMac if it has lots of memory RAM already. The hard drive could be corrupting or failing (which could account for the slow down), or of course it might have some background software going crazy (Timemachine?) and as a faint possibility there's always Malware that might have been installed? MacKeeper anyone?
