Apple Store Gripes

Avatar John Elton-Wall
For the purchase at Southampton’s West Quay of relatively straightforward Mac related items (assuming you know exactly what you want) within a reasonable time frame could I suggest purchasers use the nearby John Lewis instead of the Apple Store.

The Apple Store scrum and procedures there mid afternoon today ensured that it took me just over15 minutes to purchase a keyboard (USB/Numeric variety). Suitably irate I did a dummy run to see how long it would take at John Lewis – answer 5 minutes max. Also John Lewis would have given me a hard copy receipt, whereas Apple expects to send an e-mailed receipt. Unless there has been a change, John Lewis not only matches Apple prices but gives a longer warranty on Mac computer purchases.

I have had a similar bad experience at the Southampton Apple Store several years ago, though it was in November so the Christmas rush had started. They had a curious inability to accept payment. I haven't been back.

There's always our friends and hosts at Solutions in Bournemouth if you're further west (or John Lewis on the Bournemouth/Poole border).

I think Apple is hoping on you paying via self service on off the shelf items via their Apple App on your iPhone. I walk in pick up the thing I want to buy, scan it, buy it using the app and just walk out expecting someone to stop me... They haven't yet! Of course if you want a more expensive item, you'll need assistance.

Thanks to this post I've just bought an Apple Superdrive from John Lewis, and picked it up from a local newsagent. I was thinking of that additional year of guarantee of course, but it was certainly convenient. (A mere three quid for delivery).
Once I've worked out how to make the Mini (late 2009 running 10.8.5) recognise it instead of its built-in (defective) Superdrive I'll let you know how good it is!

Well, silly old me! I realised that Toast was telling me something in naming the drive it intended to use, which was the duff one! I clicked on that and got the option of using the new drive. Which is superb.
