Hi Sheena, have a look at home.bt.yahoo.com you may be able to access your emails from there.

Sheena,
There was a spate of this kind of problem with Yosemite's version of Mail when it was first released. That would be a hint to ensure that OS X is up to date (my personal experience is that El Capitan is a big improvement over Yosemite) though some problems seem still to linger.

Mail had an unfortunate habit of destroying account settings when it generated this error so the next step is to look at your settings from Mail's Preferences, Accounts pane. You need to check the entries under Account Information against the information btinternet sent you (or which is on their web site). The account type (POP or IMAP) will guide you as to what to look for. I suggest that you also go to the Advanced pane and uncheck 'Automatically detect and maintain account settings' as I suspect this is the mechanism that causes the damage (someone else may be able to confirm this but unchecking it relieved much of my Yosemite mail misery!).

BT's response is unhelpful but consistent with this advice: they're saying that if web mail (ie Safari) is working then the problem is in your mail client's (ie Mail's) settings. Pity they didn't help you to check them.
