Creating a cross stitch pattern from a photograph

Avatar Drew McFarlane
Hi all,

Can anyone assist please. My wife has asked if it is possible to create a cross stitch pattern from a photograph.

I found an App., 'Photo Pad', although it states that you can "Create a cross stitch pattern" I cannot find any instructions.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Drew. Most photo editing (raster) apps will offer a “posterising" filter, and it then remains to set up a grid of points across the image - that's something to which vector graphics apps are well-suited.

A simpler and infinitely cheaper alternative to using a Vector graphics app is to rule pencil lines across a print-out of the posterised image to create the intersects and then, if necessary, to ‘prick’ the pattern through onto the canvas. Happy to show you anytime.

(Fortified by a large mug of strong coffee): I left out that you will need to lower the Pixel/Dot count (ppi/dpi) to make the posterised colour squares larger to suit your purpose. Change this count setting to develop a pattern for Canvas Work - also inaccurately known as "tapestry". Some photo editor apps offer the chance to impose a grid of lines for positioning, and this can be captured with a screenshot.
