widescreen distortion

I've just bought a new (ish) monitor on eBay (Acer 242HL) and whilst it arrived very promptly, looks like new, and works very well, it's effectively stretched the image sideways. Is this something I have to live with or is there an answer lurking somewhere in System Prefs?

Wow, done it (I think). Changed the settings from 1280 x 1024 to 1344 x 1008. All looks normal again, phew.

Its native resolution is 1920 x 1080. Things should look even better is that resolution is available.

Thanks Mick, now here is a great mystery: I went into System Prefs today in order to do as you suggested only to find that the bounder has reset itelf to
1920 x 1080, and furthermore the resolution I allegedly set it to two days ago is not available!
Is this a touch of Alzheimer's or just another example of a machine telling me what to do?

Ha ha ha ha...actually I think I've twigged, I reset it on Old Faithful, my G5, not this one, my Mac Mini!
