Apple TV

Can any one suggest why my Apple TV won't connect to the 5 Ghz wireless network on my router, it connects to the 2.4 Ghz wireless network with no trouble at all

Doug,

5GHz WiFi tends to have a shorter range than 2.4GHz (according to the universal principle that you don't get anything for nothing :-) ). Could you be at the edge of the router's coverage perhaps?

At the risk of stating the obvious, you could delete details of the 2.GHz network and only supply the 5GHz to see if it is possible for it to connect. All of that said, my MacBook spends much of its time within a metre of my router and still connects to 2.4GHz instead of 5GHz occasionally.

Thank you for the reply Tony, the 5 Ghz does not show up on the Apple TV as a choice only the 2.4 Ghz. My iPad and iPhone connect to it any where on my property, but as I have said not the Apple TV, which I can't understand as it is only 6 months old and should.

Doug,

Are you able to move the Apple TV, temporarily, closed to your router to test whether the 5GHz is working at all? Otherwise, how is it positioned wrt the TV and other devices (like a Tivo, DVD player or whatever): if they are directly between the router and the Apple TV, can you move anything to change this? As a small device, it's disadvantaged in the antenna department so any help you can give it might make the difference; does your iPhone cope when it's (literally) in the same place?

Presumably you don't have any connection restrictions set on the 5GHz connection (specified MAC addresses only or whatever?). You have double-checked the password... :-)

Doug - try unplugging the power from the Apple TV then powering it up again. Unless (as Tony says) the distance from the router is too great, it should see the network.

Than you for your suggestions. When I first tried to connect to the new router the 5 Ghz. showed up but it wouldn't connect kept saying there was a problem. I restarted the Apple TV and then tried again that is when the 5 Ghz. never showed as a choice. The Apple TV sits on top of my Panasonic HD recorder the router sits on my desk and the distance is about 3 mtrs. with two brick walls both internal. My iPhone picks up alright where the Apple TV is so does my iPad will try and do a reset and unplug the power cable

I did as you suggested Mick and the Apple TV has found and connected to the 5 Ghz. network. I don't know why I didn't try that because I have used it on my old Router
