I did NOT buy it

Avatar Alan Cox
Apple has billed me for an iTunes 'song' that I definitely did not buy. Their good lady Carla says she is so pleased to help me - and goes on to tell me that I bought this item using Apple TV. Well, I have Apple TV and use it for streaming stuff from my iPad, and nothing else. I don't see how I can refute their insistence that I bought this 'song' but is it really possible to use Apple TV to buy their stuff.?
I do have a strong password but will be changing it. Any suggestions or wise thoughts?

Alan, I presume you did ask for a refund. There are instructions here that describe the automated process (no awkward ladies to talk to...). I expect they'll just do it.

Changing your password is a very wise precaution. Although it was probably finger-trouble from someone friendly, a test purchase is a typical first step from someone who's half-inched your id.

As to how it happened, are there others in the house (visiting children, perhaps)? Otherwise, it would be worth exploring the purchase process on the Apple Tv (except the last step, of course) so you know what to avoid, and what to counsel others to avoid, in the future. Does the item itself suggest any culprits who could have been browsing that artist or whatever (eg New Direction -> grand-daughter, Beethoven -> Alan).

You could also check your iTunes library to see if the song is there (you probably still have the preset 'Purchased' Playlist that makes this easier). I think you could also look at the item in the store to see whether the download is being offered (meaning it has been purchased) though this will probably just confirm that Apple thinks you have purchased it.

Finally, reflect on how much stress it's worth generating for 79p ;-)

Thanks for that, Tony. Having water boarded anyone who could have been near my kit at the relevant period, I am convinced that none of them downloaded the piece in question. Strangely I cannot find it in my music collection on the iMac. I did find it in the iTunes store and a few bars of it were enough to convince me that It must have been an idiot who wanted it or a hacker testing out my strong password (which I have now changed to another strong one)..

Sadly, the lady at the other end hasn't replied to my last but one email which was a darn sight politer than my more recent one in which I asked for a refund. If she still cannot bring herself to answer or refuses me a refund, I shall try the recognised process you suggested (which I was totally unaware of and which is added to my bookmarks just in case of need in the future). I have now found out how to use Apple TV to buy music from the iTunes store - it's actually easy but I have never been near that bit before.

I agree Tony with your wise fatherly words not to get too fussed about 79p. However, this was a 99p 'song' so in a different league!!

Alan, I'll give you the 20p if it helps to relieve the stress :-)
