Spreadsheet problem

Avatar Roy Rainford
I have been using a spreadsheet for recording monthly sales since the financial year 1996/97. So I have 19 columns down and am now recording for the year 2015/2016. However when I try to put '2015/2016' in the first column 'cell' and press the 'Return' key I get 0.999503968253968. Previously no problems and I wonder if there is a limit on the number of columns that I can have down or if that can be adjusted? However I have been able to input the monthly figures for this year. Using OS 10.9.5 and Numbers '08 version 1.0.3.

Roy, I think if you change the cell type to text you will be okay. If you divide 2015 by 2016 I'm guessing that you will get a clue as to what is going on!

Thanks Trevor. I got the clue! However I can't find a way of changing the cell type beyond making it 'text'. That allows me to put the year in but not 2015/2016. So now that I have your clue I have tried 2015-2016 and that works! Am happy with that solution but can't understand why I could put the equivalent of 2015/2016 in every cell above the current year for the past 19 years.

Roy,
Double quotes is another solution, putting: ="2015/2016" is longer winded but should always work.

The reason why the others worked is probably Numbers being clever, possibly with a bit of cut and paste on your behalf?

My old 'grey matter' has been working overtime overnight subconsciously because this morning I realise that for the past 19 years I was using the spreadsheet on my old iMac with Clarisworks 6. I transferred it to my newer iMac using Numbers '08 earlier this year!!!!!!
Many thanks Trevor and Tony for your comments.
