Missing video clip

Avatar Michael Corgan
I took a short video at a party and am compiling a CD to send to my hosts. However, while all the still shots have downloaded via Image Capture the video clip has not and yet is plain to see on the camera. The file list on the SD card doesn't show it either, neither as a JPEG (which it isn't) nor as an MPEG (which I guess it should be). And there is no gap in file numbering, with the preceding and following still shots having consecutive numbers. How can I download it?

Hi Michael,

Odd, Image Capture can see the videos on my Canon 7D MkII. Those are .MOV, are there any file suffices that you don't recognise that could be them (eg Panasonic videos are .MTS, could be MP4)? They're probably not MPEG, there are better CODECs available now.

Things to try:
* Do you have a card reader, if so just use the Finder (but you thought of that...)
* The software that came with the camera (or the manufacturer's web site might have a download)
* Do you have any other photo/video processing software? Photos, iMovie, Aperture worth a try; Lightroom does everything on my Canon, video included.

What make/type of camera is it?

Best of luck.

Hi Tony
As you rightly guessed, I did try looking at the SD card in Finder, using a card reader. No dice. The file numbers run in uninterrupted sequence and there is no sign of the missing video clip. It shows and plays when the card is put back in the camera (a Lumix FZ200). I have quite a few other video clips taken with this camera which can be viewed and are numbered in correct sequence, with only the MP4 suffix denoting their difference. Aperture wouldn't look at the files, and Photoshop sees what Finder sees. Tomorrow I will try some more video clips to see if they show up. Could it be the SD card perhaps? It's a Panasonic 16GB SDHC.
I will try with another SD card too. Watch this spot!

Hi Michael,

If the video plays on the camera it has to be somewhere (just to state the obvious). Does your camera have some internal storage (I have a baby Panasonic that does)? If so, there's probably a menu item somewhere to copy the file to removable storage (SD card or whatever). [Might be a Copy item on the Playback menu...].

Well, it isn't the SD card - took some more video on the one already mentioned and another. Both lots of video show while the card is being viewed through the camera playback, but do not show on the card in Image Capture regardless of whether the card is connected to the Mac via a card reader or through the camera (a friend thought that the videos might be stored in the camera's memory). Quicktime doesn't see them either.
Any more suggestions?

Hi Tony
Saw your suggestions after posting. Checked the camera menu and found that the Movie format had reset to AVCHD instead of MP4. How to access these videos is the next burning question!

You could try an app on the app store called Free MP4 Converter I have used is and found it worked very well and I believe it free on the app store

Hi Michael,

I had some Panasonic .MTS files given to me the other day, I think they're AVCHD. iMovie opened them for me but I was compiling a movie so it was convenient to use iMovie anyway. Interestingly, QuickTime (Player to Pro v7) won't open them.

Anyway, does this mean that you've found the file?

Having been recommended to go to the source - i.e,Panasonic, since that was the camera used to record the missing movie and the best I got from the guy in the Dorchester shop was that I should go to the Panasonic web site and that the AVCHD format is unique to Panasonic and Sony. Panasonic support told me that iMovie '09 would open the file. I had previously tried the internet and found a free download for a Faasoft app that only downloaded half of the clip - you needed to cough up £30 to get the full clip! I have consequently reloaded iMovie onto my iMac and have now got the whole file. Thanks everyone for weighing in and offeriing solutions - we get there in the end!
