Emails via iPhone and iPad

Avatar Roy Rainford
During a recent week in Sussex I had problems trying to send emails from my iPhone and iPad.
1. Using the hotel WiFi, emails were received but couldn't be sent. Had to use web based gMail instead.
2. When out and about, I had the same problem with the iPhone using the Talkmobile/Vodafone network
3. All the "Failed to send" emails ended up in the outbox and I couldn't delete them. I haven't yet switched on the devices in case the emails send automatically now that I am back on my home network. I prefer not to send them having sent gMail ones instead.

Other guests in the hotel were happily sending out their emails on the local WiFi.
iPhone 4S is on IOS version 8.2 and the iPad Air 2 is on 8.1.3. My iMac is on Mavericks 10.9.5 with Mail v7.3. I use TalkTalk as my ISP.
Wonder if my settings are wrong?

It depends on the email address you were trying to use - if it's connected to your ISP, they may require different settings when you're at home (where they know it's you sending because it's coming to them down the broadband line you pay them for) to those when you're away when you'd have to prove it's you by sending a user name and password. Most will now allow the user name and password to be sent when at home even if they're not needed.

Thanks Mick. I have spoken to my ISP, TalkTalk, who said that because I send emails from home successfully then the problem in sending from hotels or other WiFi 'hotspots' is not something they (TalkTalk) can solve. Seems that I will have to use web mail for sending emails when away from home.
