Re: Time for a new Snow Leopard!

Minimising the number of applications open seems to have reduced the number and frequency of crashes in general but Mail has just 'hung' twice when only Safari was running in the background. I checked the reports and both said this: Sudden Term: Dirty Task size: 20369 pages (+2)
Both 'Hangs' occurred when I clicked the "Attach a document" "Paper clip" symbol on the top of a draft message. I am going to restart and try again.

The iMac would not restart. The screen went white and stuck. Have had to power down again and use this iPad instead. Never had so much trouble before Mavericks. Wondering if Yosemite might be more stable?

Roy,

I think you need to get back to a stable position before you think about an OS upgrade.

Are you able to start the Mac? If not, try to reboot in Recovery Mode. Either way, verify your internal disk using Disk Utility (it's available in Recovery Mode or you can run it from Spotlight if you've started normally). At the top of the DU sidebar you'll see your disk (probably called Macintosh HD) twice. Click the second (indented) entry and then click Verify Disk (bottom right). This will take some time and the computer won't really work whilst it's happening. When it's done, the last line of the output will announce the result - we're looking for green print, not red.

If DU detects errors, click Repair Disk and wait again. You may have to do this more than once before DU announces that you're disk is OK.

Once you're able to run again, can we see a bit more of your system log please? Ideally copy it after the crash happens again or take the current log if you know what time the previous crash happened. Perhaps you can put the log on Dropbox or similar, otherwise send it to me (and any other volunteers??).

Another thing that might help is to remove any Start-up items against your account (System Preferences->Users & Groups, select on the top bar). This will help to ease the load :-)

Thanks Tony. The iMac restarted after a 'rest' so I will work on your suggestions and report back later.

I am pleased to report back as promised because following analysis of the System Log by Tony and taken up his subsequent suggestion to remove Sophos Anti-virus software from my iMac I have had a crash-free week. No 'freezing' of programmes either. During this week I have regularly used Lightroom, Bridge and Photoshop. What a relief. Many thanks to Tony for his 'behind the scenes' analysis and for his successful solution.

Thanks for reporting back. I'll add this episode as another reason why I don't run third party anti-virus software (on a day to day basis) or software which can potentially carry viruses.
(Cough! Microsoft... Cough!) :-)
