iMac not starting up from sleep

My iMac has started to not start up from sleep. When I push any key to start up again it dies and I have to disconnect it from the mains and plug in again to get it to start up again.

Have you any new peripherals plugged in (HDD etc?). Did it start happening after a system update?

Only added a Firewire Lacie DVD DL rewriter but that had been connected for about 3 days before this started to happen. No big system updates.

Twice this has happened to my iMac. Apple Store advised me to press the power button and hold for twenty seconds to restart my mac. My mac seem fine now.

Thank you for the information Linda, I have been resetting the SMU to get my Mac going again this operation is described in article No.301733 on the Apple web site
