Turning off auto capitalisation?

Avatar Trevor Hewson
It pains me to admit it, but my typing (and spelling!) has deteriorated to the point where the autocorrection facility, in spite of being a right royal nuisance from time to time, is, on balance, helpful.

However, I frequently find that our combined efforts to capitalise the start of a new sentence cancel each other out so I would like to turn off this specific feature. Interestingly, in typing this posting, I see that auto correction is active but auto capitalisation is not, so it clearly is possible!

I'm still on Mavericks by the way.

Thanks in anticipation,

Trevor

I think it will vary from app to app - I don't think there's a system wide setting. In Pages for example, look at Format>Font>Capitalisation

Hi Trevor and Mick. Happy New Year to all.
This is a tissue of issues, and you don't say which Application(s) and versions you are using, so here are some pointers for anyone else interested.

Access to Grammar and Spelling correction options are generally through the App's Edit menu, and at a guess, Apple use a common software “engine” across all their apps — one for all and all for one.

Mick’s Format > Font > Capitalisation route (for Apple apps) only offers All Caps, Small Caps, and Title capitalisation. None of these deal with the capital letter at the beginning of the sentence unless careful selection of a single letter is adopted :)

MS Word (can't check here beyond Word 2008) has a variety of capitalisation issues as part of a set of menu Tools items, including capitalising initial letters of sentences - and almost certainly still does. Libre Office has this feature too.

Yosemite (and I think Mavericks) no longer has offer this feature system-wide, nor do Text Edit v1.10 and Pages 5.x either.

It is possible to set up Keyboard shortcuts (System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts) but that is a labour of love and probably only for desperadoes.

Using different OSX and Application combinations could cause anomalies — if you enjoy that sort of thing!

It’s worth remembering that the USA spells capitalisation with a zed (zee) so research needs to include both options. hth — a bit.

Further to Euan's reply, I can confirm my version of Pages (5.5.1) offers None under Capitalization.

Euan/Mick, Thanks for the replies. I think this issue shows up most often in Mail but now that I know it is App-specific, I'll have to look into it more carefully. I'd looked in System Preferences and in Mail's preferences but hadn't thought of searching the menus.

Mail doesn't offer the same control. On the Edit menu, under Transformations, there's the option to Capitalize highlighted text but not turn it off. (My Mail does not auto capitalise after a full stop.)

I've managed to turn off capitalisation on the iPad (Settings/General/Keyboard). I'll have another look at the iMac in the next day or two. it seems odd that it's a global setting on iOS but app-specific on the Mac.
