migrating to a newer iMac

We have an older iMac running 10.6.8, which we want to migrate the information from, onto a newer iMac currently running Mavericks but capable of Yosemite. We would like to use Migration Assistant to make life easier.
Do I firstly wipe the hard drive on the newer one completely, migrate info. from the older one and then update the OS once this is done or is there a better way? I will back up the older iMac but are there any other precautions I should take? Not having any OS disks these days made me want to check before taking the plunge.
