Problem with loss of microphone use in Yosemite

Avatar Michael Corgan
An unfortunate LMUG member posted this on LMUG-talk:

For the first time since I installed Yosemite, I tried to use the inbuilt mike of my iMac (as I've always done) to answer a friend who'd called me on Skype. The mike doesn't work any more. My friend couldn't hear a word. Great.

To find out if the culprit was Skype or my Mac I tried recording my voice with Quicktime, no joy. So it's the Mac and its microphone.

System preferences / sound input gives a choice between two options. Tried both, recording my voice, still using the inbuilt mike and Quicktime.

1 ) With the first option on offer from System preferences , (External microphone / type : microphone port), playback gave a strange sound, like paper being ruffled - no voice?

2 ) With the second option, (Line in / Audio line-in port) there was no playback sound at all. Silence.

Support.apple says : "from the list of input devices, select the one you want to use. All sound inputs available to your Mac are listed. If your display has an internal microphone, it’s listed as “Display Audio.” Well, NO. There is no "Display Audio" listed

Has anyone experienced this and if so have they found a solution that I can pass on?

Hi Mike. It seems that there is a bug. Some people have found that opening Terminal and typing "sudo killall coreaudiod" followed by your password (may) work at least until a restart.

Roll on 10.10.2, it does seem that Apple has a number of similar problems to be resolved. It may (possibly) help if both parties to the call have Yosemite installed.

btw. the System Preference for Built-in sound input (Yosemite) is "Internal Microphone" not "Display Audio".

It is display audio if you are using a stand alone screen as on a Mac Pro or Mac Mini (I presume)

I think Euan's answer only applies to external mics and not the inbuilt one of an iMac.

I think various apps (including Skype?) have their own preferences which would allow you to choose a different setting (in this case mic) to the system wide setting. For example, I can set my system mic to Line In but Messages retains my preference set there of an old iSight camera mic - it is not overridden by the system setting.

P.S. If LMUG members didn't manage to solve that query but one of us did, persuade the member he or she should join WAMUG ;-)
