iphone in recovery mode

I tried to update my iPhone to the latest ios8
and i plugged into iTunes and it seemed to be going well, then i received a message saying that it coulnt update because my iPhone was in recovery mode! it told me to reboot my iPhone
I did this and my iPhone told me to plug into iTunes
then the message comes back that my iPhone is in recovery mode! HELP!!

Hi Sheena,
did you make a backup (in iTunes) of your iPhone before doing this update? The instruction to refer to iTunes probably refers to such a backup, and see “Option 1” in the web page referenced below.

If you didn’t, at worst you may have to “reconstruct” your iPhone data from any other resources you may have after resetting it to “Factory settings”.

Always make sure you are fully backed up especially before a major OS update (iTunes for iOS, clone for OSX) Mostly there will be no problem, but just sometimes…

Sheena - this may sound weird but unplug your phone, reboot your Mac then try again.

sorry Mick i missed your reply as i had to go out! but eventually my macbook sorted it out and it probably was down to rebooting my macbook so thanks for your advice.
