Photos from iPhone to Desktop

Avatar Roy Rainford
I take photos with an iPhone 4s (sometimes) and they appear on a "Camera Roll" and "Photo Stream" on the phone. They also appear, as if by magic, on my iPad where I can 'enhance' them using apps. I assume they are shared between the two devices via iCloud which is on both. I would like to use the photos on my desktop iMac so is there a way of transferring them via iCloud?

I would connect the Phone/Pad to your Mac open up iPhoto import the into iPhoto and the drag them on to the desktop. Not sure about iCloud

Thanks Doug. Hadn't thought of that way onto the desktop but it works and also works for Lightroom.

if you turn on PhotoStream on your iMac (assuming your version of the OS and iPhoto are modern enough) they will appear there too. But beware - any photo you load into iPhoto from your high quality SLR will be sent to your mobile devices and being large files may fill them up. So Doug's suggestion may actually be better for you than PhtooStream.

Thank you Mick. It seems that my OS and iPhoto are not modern enough (as you probably guessed!) because I can't find PhotoStream on the iMac OS 10.6.8 and iPhoto'09 which is well out-of-date and seldom used,(prefer using Lightroom 4). On the iMac under 'Sharing' I have File Sharing ticked so is this sharing anything with the iPhone and iPad ? (both on v 7.1.1). I load photos from my DSLR usually in RAW format to Lightroom and they fortunately don't appear on the iPhone or iPad. However photos taken on the iPhone do appear in Lightroom when connected as Doug suggested so I will use that method.

Thanks for mentioning the possibility of overloading the iPhone and iPad with photos. This prompted me to check that aspect. Available capacity is getting low on both devices so I have some deleting to do. I see duplicates in the 'Camera Roll' and PhotoStream' on the iPhone and need to learn more about them to get my 'workflow' sorted out. I wonder if there is a tutorial available anywhere?

Now transferring images from iPhone to Lightroom on iMac and developing them there. However I can't find a way of putting some of the images back to the iPhone. When I try to export them from LR I am told that Mobile Me is not set up but in System Prefs clicking Mobile Me takes me to iCloud to set up. That is not available on System Prefs due to OS not being up-to-date. Is there a work-around without updating the OS?

Thanks to a helpful call from a member the transfer problem was solved. Resulting from that I find that Adobe have an App which will be useful in future: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/how-to/lightroom-mobile.html
