Virus/Spyware

Avatar Roy Rainford
During backup of my iMac HD using Carbon Copy Cloner this warning appeared on my desktop: "Threat Detected by Sophus Anti-Virus" - "Virus/Spyware" Troj/Zbot-HDY has been detected and listed in Quarantine Manager. There is a clickable button on the warning to 'Open Quarantine Manager'. Should I open it and delete something?

Hi Roy. Yes, open Quarantine Manager, select the little offender, type your password to unlock the padlock. At this point it may be worth checking the path and filename to see how the little offender arrived. Now click on "clean up threat" -- there will be a warning that this action might delete something you might want, and in general this can be safely ignored. Let Sophos do its thing and then quit.

It's likely that the trojan is hidden in an email attachment promising something that doesn't relate to your own life, such as a Boarding Pass for a US airport, a tax recalculation, a validation for a courier parcel, something for nothing. After treatment throw it in the waste and empty the waste -- and know that you are protecting your Windows buddies from harm. It is unlikely that these things would do much harm to a Mac, but better safe than sorry.

Many thanks Euan. Have done that now and all seems to be well. Roy
