Prompted by an interesting article in the Financial Times by Clear Barrett titled “What I wish I’d known before my smartphone was snatched”. David ran through many of the points raised by Claer and some of the suggestions made by readers in the Comments Section. We found that Apple’s recent system addition Stolen Device Protection is not turned on by default so most immediately turned it on. We had a slight hiccup when in his presentation David had missed out a key step creating an excellent shortcut which shuts Settings Down as soon as it is opened requiring face or finger recognition to reopen, but we got there in the end. If any member would like to read the full FT article please email David M.

Time to Say Goodbye - Mick talked about what to do with old devices. He gave the procedures for reverting them to factory settings removing all personal data. Apple have quite elaborate procedure in some instances though it gets simpler with the more modern systems. He recommend checking Apple’s web site for details when the time comes.

When it comes to disposing if not passing on to a member of the family or a friend, asking Apple for a trade in price looks a poor route. Mick noted that Apple were marking up, at least in his example, trade-in prices by a factor 5 or more. John Lewis trade-ins in did not get any enthusiasm from the members present. Mick suggested that eBay is is a good place to check prices but if not wishing to use eBay, there are others such as macfinder.co.uk, musicmagpie.co.uk and backmarket.co.uk but again an Internet search may help. Internet search will also highlight Charities but some of those seemed very picky on what they are willing to take. Then you can always send old devices for recycling. Apple will take back old gear without you making any new purchase, giving a signed receipt if required.

We had a brief discussion about the pros and cons of Apple Music and Spotify and using with Apple Car Play.

Georgia recommended a YouTube channel, Rich Bowlin who gives tips for Seniors on Apple devices, from which she has discovered all sort of features she had not idea were there.
