Salisbury — Jul 25th 2023

The first part of this month's meeting was devoted to how to use the on-screen keyboard to establish what additional characters are provided by using modifier keys. Also, how a prolonged press on any of the keys in the row below the F keys provides a further selection.

The second part of this month's meeting was devoted to illustrative examples of how the usual commands available in desktop and laptop computers in the Finder, Mail and Safari could be modified by the addition of the keys, principally the Option key, located to the left of the space bar. The delete key is normally used to delete characters to the left of the insertion point, but the addition of the fn key results instead in deletion to the right.

When adjusting the size of an on-screen window, the addition of the Option key provides a way to simultaneously mirror-image the changes.

Finally, a prolonged press on the a, e, i, o, u, c, l, n s, w, y or z keys reveals a number of diacritic additions that can be made, particularly useful in correctly formatting some words of foreign origin.

The group also tackled problems raised by one member who wished to group his large number of photos by subject, and other members whose particular system layouts did not originally show the on-screen keyboard.
