Salisbury — Sep 28th 2021

Salisbury’s first meeting post-lockdown was held in the old Shoemakers Hall at The Pheasant Inn, an early Tudor building in the city centre. Though the weather was atrocious, 8 members and 1 guest attended.

As a personal gift for help in the past, Barry gave Brian Tapper a voucher entitling a couple to have a steam train excursion as he thought that though Brian was an avid photographer of steam trains it would be a good idea if he actually experienced a trip on one.

Barry then gave a presentation on his previous experiences with PC computer failures before moving to Apple hardware. This has led him to use both local backups (Time Machine, Carbon Copy Cloner) and remote backups (iCloud, Backblaze). Time Machine has failed on at least one occasion, perhaps because of the problems associated with incremental backup.

Members were able to try the new versions of the MacBook Air and iPad Pro, both with the Apple M1 chip. A large file was downloaded to the iPad and was seen be opened and manipulated much faster than on similar hardware with an earlier chip installed.

Discussions included how to handle matters when the original 5GB iCloud storage was full, and we also tried to help with a member’s difficulty in creating a chart with dates on the X-axis from spreadsheet entries.

All agreed that meeting in this venue had been a success and so the room has been booked for our October meeting when David Moon will give a presentation on the Apple Watch.

A very enjoyable evening, Barry's first meeting as our Salisbury organiser was a complete success, and really nice for me to go out even on such a rainy night, in all a very pleasant informative meeting and it was it good to see some of our members in person at last.
Thank you Barry.
