Dorchester — Nov 18th 2008

At the last meeting before Christmas, John introduced his light hearted look at the Credit Crunch, a very topical Keynote presentation which he had devised to counter the prevailing pre Christmas spending spree anticipatory gloom, and which was received very well by the assembled company. The Chancellor could, in retrospect, have benefited by using John's approach to lighten the tone of his Pre Budget Statement a week later.

He followed this with a brief introduction to Print Shop 2, a very versatile programme which can be used to produce greetings cards, calendars, CD case labels, and lots of other good things. It works with, and integrates seamlessly with, other mainstays of the Mac OS, including iCal, iPhoto and Address Book, and appears to be extremely flexible. (Have you ever tried to create an iPhoto Greetings Card using UK paper sizes?)

After the usual convivial interlude at the Colliton Club Bar, Euan then explained some of the benefits of using Automator, and illustrated these with an application which opened a video file and played it using Quick Time with preset settings, and another which merged text files, and spoke them, telling the story of a love lorn lady who had fallen for the charms of the manly character depicted by the Automator logo. A tragic and moving tale, which had the membership weeping into the dregs of their beer, before rallying to participate in the usual Q&A session, which concluded proceedings until January.
