Fareham — Jan 13th 2018

There were 15 people at this meeting, which included one guest.

This month’s talks were both on the subject of graphics.
First, John gave us an overview and threw some light on the often-confused subject of resolutions and aspect ratios. He showed us the different ways of expressing these when referring to various equipment, such as display screens, digital cameras, scanners and printers.
Next, he used 2 projectors to demonstrate how you could easily set up more than one screen to provide a much bigger desktop area.
Finally, he showed us how an incredibly high-resolution photo of a Bentley could look like, especially when zoomed in (see here).

John’s talk dovetailed nicely with Stuart’s talk for the second half, on how and why to upgrade the graphics processor (GPU) in your Mac. An old Mac Pro tower may be, well, old, but it can still make use of brand new graphics cards under High Sierra, to accelerate all sorts of software, not just games or 3D modelling. Stuart had done just that with his 2009 Mac Pro, and is now running a nice new 4K monitor on his system. And those same cards can be used with any Mac that has Thunderbolt ports, thanks to external GPU cases. It’s a complicated subject that could have befuddled non-nerds, but with the aid of some explanatory video clips Stuart made his points well and kept interest levels high. Some members were considering possible future spending on shiny new GPUs. He also had a PDF going into more- but not too much more- detail, plus links to the YouTube videos and benchmarking program shown in the presentation. The PDF is available for anyone interested here.

The next meeting will be on Saturday 10th February, starting as usual at 10.30am. We’ll be discussing the topic of Keyboard Shortcuts, relating to iOS devices as well as to Macs.
