Fareham — Mar 11th 2017
Michael Corgan travelled from Bridport to give us a very interesting presentation, describing and demonstrating the many features of the Preview application.
He emphasized that it was much more than just a document viewer. You can take screenshots, scan from a USB connected scanner, or import photos directly from a camera or from a file, then crop, resize, edit and convert them to different formats, and even play a slideshow.
PDF documents could be rearranged and merged, as well as being annotated with highlights and notes. PDF forms could be digitally filled-in and signed, and he showed us two methods of producing the signature.
Finally, Michael gave us some information about a range of Mac books, available from the ‘Take Control Books’ website, which offer discounts to any of our members.
After the break, John gave us a brief talk about some not-so-obvious iOS features using his iPad.
He started by demonstrating how to use the built-in camera without logging in, and an alternative way to get back to the home screen. He showed us how to save a photo attached to an email, and a few other things to do in the Mail app. Next, he used the Notes app to show a few tricks on the keyboard, including how to type numbers quickly within a text document, and how to move the cursor around in a similar way to using a mouse.
John mentioned that the Apple bluetooth keyboard is now selling for £99, but you could get a much cheaper version costing £20 from Wilko, and the layout matches that of the Apple version. A keyboard is much quicker to use for inputing text into an iOS device, and it has the added bonus that many of the standard keyboard shortcuts can now be used, including the function keys which adjust the brightness and volume.
He concluded by demonstrating a conventional mouse - also Bluetooth, which only costs £8.50 again from Wilko.
In the Q&A session, topics included - Pairing a bluetooth keyboard with an iPad, printing onto A5 size paper and also A5 booklets, and how to make a key photo for an album in the Photos app on an iPad.
The next meeting will be on the 8th April, starting as usual at 10.30am.
