Michael showed us extensive range of capabilities of Preview in document and image management, from scanning, editing images, adding texts and highlights etc using the markup menu and converting documents to different formats. Preview comes as part of the Apple bundled software and the version is related to the operating system and cannot be updated independently. Working with pdfs Preview enables the combining of documents, re-sorting, deleting and adding pages. Combine this to the facility, via the print menu, to convert any document to a pdf makes for a powerful tool. Michael showed how multiple small images can be scanned together on a flatbed scanner and yet output as individual files. Michael recommends the ‘Take Control with Preview’ booklet available https://www.takecontrolbooks.com/preview and there is discount code available to members on request to Michael or David.
In Q&A we looked at why Photos in ‘All Photos’ on the Mac did not stay in the same order as on IOS devices and concluded that they are the order they reached the Mac from iCloud not based on the Exif information built into the photo but, looked at in Photos on the Mac, they are in date order. David demonstrated that oddly if you delete a photo from PhotoStream on an IOS device it is not deleted from Photos on the Mac, but delete a photo from PhotoStream on the Mac it is also deleted from Photos. (he has not checked if it was deleted from another Mac sharing the same account).
With High Sierra due to be released shortly Euan explained that it will incorporate Apple’s new file system APFS, which will replace Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Unbeknownst to users, Apple have been running tests through IOS for some time and this file system will be common to all Apple platforms. APFS is designed to makes best use of SSD and add increased security. Whilst all this change will happen behind the scenes, Euan stressed the importance of a full BACKUP before upgrading to High Sierra. Existing external drives will continue to operate happily on Mac OS Extended (Journaled). For more detailed info watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-99L_23uWDg&t=22s.

APFS won't be installed on Hard Drives either (just SSDs). It is generally presumed that HDs and Fusion Drives will be supported by a subsequent dot release of High Sierra.
