John Lemon travelled from Bridport to present a very interesting explenation of a free app ViewRanger, produced by Ordnance Survey shows high definition OS maps that can be used on iPad and iPhone you are able to zoom in on a particular area.
The maps are the same high quality of the more familiar paper maps, these can be downloaded and paid for at a very reasonable price but if you need a the full UK map it will set you back quite a lot more at about £300 the smaller sections will cost you a matter of pence making them very affordable way of purchasing a 10km squares still at high definition, there are also 5km squares available, they are known as tiles that are used to plan walking routes, these maps are stored on your iPad.
The maps are a great way to search for details info, such as distance, and height. There is also a function for taking photographs on your iPad there is the facility of taking a photo of the horizon with the app putting up locations on the photo identifying point of interest and the use of GPS it can find your location.
If you have a favourite walk you can download a walk or upload one to the web page so that others who are interested use your walk as well.
The maps included by OS are a few other countries at the same resolution.
There was quite a lot of questions as feedback to a really great presentation.
After a break for coffee John showed us the 3D section of Google Earth showing how the app is capable of rendering a 3D view a a road in Southampton.
