Fareham — Oct 8th 2016

There were 9 members at this meeting, and we had a slightly delayed start due to an unexpected room change!
The meeting today was not as technical as normal, but still had a link with Apple devices.

Euan, from Dorchester, gave us a very interesting talk about how punctuation has evolved over the years.
He started by explaining how punctuation can change and clarify the meaning of a sentence, that would otherwise have been quite ambiguous. Euan showed us the vast number of symbols and emojis already included with Mac OSX, and how easy they were to access. He also introduced to some of us, a few new words, such as Glyphs.
For a completely different approach when dealing with the more common symbols, we were shown a short video clip of Victor Borge's famous phonetic punctuation.
Euan then listed how the different substances to write on developed, from carving onto stone up to the preset day paper, as well as touch screens. He also described how the early printing presses worked.
Although this was mainly a light hearted talk, Euan covered the topic very well and we learnt quite a lot of new and historical facts.

After the break, Jeanette gave us another very pleasant visual talk about her allotment, this time featuring her Polytunnel.
After her initial outlay for the Polytunnel, she has successfully managed to keep her construction costs down by doing lots of improvising. Using photos and videos made on her iPhone and iPad, she showed us a large amount of her amazing collection of vegetables that she is growing, and also some fruit.
Apart from the usual visitors that Jeanette is happy to invite, such as bees and other insects, and the local cat, 3 ducks also found their way into the Polytunnel. Also, her security camera managed to catch 2 very unwelcome male visitors, who cut open the polythene door to let themselves in. Their photo is now on a wanted poster nearby, which hopefully should deter others.
Finally, Jeanette ran out of time, still having several hundred more photos to show, so no doubt we'll ask her to do another session sometime.

The next meeting will be on Saturday 12th November at 10.30am.
