John gave us a talk about some internet scams, starting with ID theft.
He illustrated a typical scenario whereby a hacker had sent out phishing emails to a long list of email addresses. Each phishing email had a link to a fake website that looked authentic with exact copies of forms to fill out, the Halifax bank was chosen in this example. Anyone that fell into the trap and filled in the forms, would automatically send their personal and security details directly to the Hacker. He would then be in total control of their account, and could start stealing their money and changing the account details etc.
John explained how to spot these phishing emails and suggested some precautions to take, namely, don't click on links in emails, use different email addresses for different functions, avoid entering sensitive data when connected to a Wifi hotspot and don't reply to Spam emails.
Next, John covered Internet Banking, discussing its uses and security, and emphasising that you should always make sure you're on the correct website, and again avoid Wifi hotspots. Finally, he covered Buying online, and listed some precautions to take.
Derek introduced the group to Google Maps on the Mac via a browser. He chose Chrome, since both are from Google and should have synergy between them.
He demonstrated how the product could show street/road layouts and also the satellite view, which showed buildings and terrain from the sky.
Route planning was mentioned next, showing how to request a route, how to amend it, save it for both sharing and future reference, and how to print out a set of turn-by-turn instructions for a journey.
Derek then went on to demonstrate how to get answers to technical questions using Google Search.
He emphasized the need to first of all understand exactly what the question should be before asking it in order to get useful and relevant answers. He used two questions to resolve some issues he had recently encountered.
The Q&A session included some discussion about the Gmail spam filter, Google ID, and the requirement to accept Terms and Conditions when searching with Google.
Also discussed was the Raspberry Pie hardware, editing movies using Quicktime and the WAMUG Joining procedure.
The next meeting will be on Saturday 9th April, starting at 10.30am.
