Fareham — Jan 9th 2016

There was a good turnout by 15 members and one guest at this first meeting of 2016.

Tony Still gave a very interesting and detailed presentation about Apple's "Photos" app, the replacement for iPhoto. As a Lightroom user, he was new to "Photos" and urged people to look at it again if they were put off when it was first released with Yosemite, it has improved since then. The emphasis of the presentation was on loading and organising your photos since this is the aspect that seems most to confuse users. This touched on the issue of using iCloud for storage but the free storage is quite limited so Tony advised against, suggesting saving the free storage allowance for iCloud Photo Sharing.
"Photos" matches its capabilities across Mac and iPad quite closely. The display options are quite clever but very prescriptive: the options beyond the default are very few and "Photos" will not display titles against individual pictures. Photo stream, on the other hand, was recommended since it is simple, useful and uses extra iCloud storage that is not chargeable.
Finally Tony noted that while "Photos" on the Mac has a reasonable help built-in, the iPad version seems to be without a manual. The answer is to download the iPad User Manual from Apple at... https://support.apple.com/en_GB/manuals/ipad

The Q&A session included a discussion about using multiple "Photos" libraries.
Other topics included - using the internet without a having a phone line connected to your house, and Flash software being phased out and likely to be replaced by HTML5. Also a question about text messaging on more than one IOS device using the same user id, whereby one connected to a wifi network would take precedence over another one connected to the mobile phone network.

The next meeting will be on Saturday 13th February at 10.30am.
