David Moon gave a very interesting and informative talk about the Apple Watch.
He described the various faces and straps that were available. The watch works mainly as a slave to an iPhone, but it can function on its own to play music via bluetooth headphones or speakers as he demonstrated.
David was very impressed by the Activity App, which could show how many calories he'd burned as well as monitoring his heart rate, etc. The watch will even prompt him to stand up occasionally if he is seated too long!
Notifications were good enabling him to instantly read any new emails or messages, and Siri can be used to write and send dictated texts.
The weather can also be displayed at your current location as well as a forecast for later that day.
The Maps App was good when following a walking route, it would guide you by tapping your wrist to indicate which turning to take.
Another useful feature was being able to take a steady photo on the iPhone remotely from the watch.
After the break, John took us through the history of iTunes listing the major changes since its launch back in 2001.
He illustrated the list using a vertical timeline which showed all the different logos used for the various versions.
He then showed us the current iTunes and described how Apple often changed the layout and hid some of the buttons when they brought out a new version, which made you re-learn how to use it.
He also briefly demonstrated internet radio, which is a feature that has been part of iTunes since version 2, but has barely been mentioned by Apple.
The Q&A session included discussion about upgrading to El Capitan and the pros and cons of doing a clean install. Also we discussed the need to update software, and it was agreed that security updates should always be done, but these were only likely to be available for the more recent OS X versions.
As from January onwards, we will be moving the meetings back to the conference room again.
Please note, there won't be a meeting in December, the next one will be on 9th January, starting at 10.30am as usual.
