Bournemouth — Feb 17th 2015

Once the rather novel IT setup had been persuaded to function (more later), Tony introduced himself to give a talk on Keynote on the iPad.

The talk covered the design, production and delivery of a presentation, the first section emphasising the importance of sorting out your ideas at the outset, being clear on the objectives of the talk and tailoring it to the intended audience.

Tony's presentation had been prepared entirely on the iPad although generally he found it more convenient to do the bulk of the work on a Mac. The construction of slides in Keynote was demonstrated, including the use of templates and the handling of text and images. Animating transitions between slides and the options for progressively revealing the slide's content (building) were also covered.

Some tips on presenting were shared, including various options for customising Keynote's presenter's display. On this occasion Tony was presenting wirelessly from his iPad via Solutions' Apple TV. This necessitated use of an HDMI to VGA converter because the projector had no HDMI input. Later, other members were invited to share content from their iOS devices onto the screen via Airplay - a facility that could be useful in Q&A sessions in the future. This generally worked well but there did seem to be some problem in streaming video over this setup which needs further investigation.

Tony was thanked for a very clear and entertaining talk (and I think most of us managed to pretend not to have realised the element of enlightened self interest in our new convenor encouraging us all to contemplate producing presentations).

After a coffee break, there was the usual Q&A session, covering problems displaying Word documents on an iPad, transferring PDFs from Mac to iPad, invalid SSL certificates and shared use of a common e-mail address.

Finally time was called on another successful meeting - 14 people attending in all.
